Sarah Connolly Paul Agnew Handel Ailish Tynan Tynan Jonathan Lemalu
Mezzo-soprano Sarah Connolly sings the recitative: "Then shall be brought to pass..."; she and tenor Paul Agnew then sing the duet: "O death, where is thy sting?" from Part III of "The Messiah" by George Frederic Handel. Alto Then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written: "Death is swallowed up in victory." (I Corinthians 15: 54) Alto & tenor O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory? The sting of death is sin, and the strength of sin is the law. (I Corinthians 15: 55-56) This performance, which was conducted by the Abbey's Organist and Master of Choristers James O'Donnell, took place on the day of the 250th anniversary of the composer's death and in the place where he is buried. The Abbey Choir was joined by the period-instrument orchestra St. James's Baroque, and soloists Ailish Tynan, Sarah Connolly, Paul Agnew and Jonathan Lemalu.
