Asher Asher Fisch Johannes Brahms Beethoven Pinchas Zukerman Amanda Forsyth Forsyth Garrick Ohlsson Waso Perth Concert Hall 1876 2015
WASO, Principal Conductor Asher Fisch and internationally acclaimed guest artists perform Brahms' greatest works over two majestic weekends. Hailed as Beethoven's successor, Johannes Brahms combined his musical heritage with his romantic outlook to write music of immense expressive power and emotional depth. DISCOVER BRAHMS 6.30PM, THURSDAY 20 AUGUST PERTH CONCERT HALL Brahms started his musical life as a pianist in the brothels of Hamburg’s port. He matured to be primarily a composer of piano and chamber music, songs and choral works. He ended his life in Vienna as Europe’s most celebrated symphonist after Beethoven. This long and tormented journey to the symphony is the topic of Asher Fisch's ‘Discover Brahms’ talk, in preparation for WASO’s complete symphonic cycle. PINCHAS ZUKERMAN PLAYS BRAHMS 7.30PM, FRIDAY 21 AUGUST PERTH CONCERT HALL One of the world's greatest violinists returns to WASO! Brahms' Violin Concerto is impassioned, noble and deeply expressive - a perfect vehicle for the superlative musicianship of Pinchas Zukerman. It took Brahms over 20 years to compose his First Symphony, but when it premiered in 1876 it was hailed a masterpiece. From its pounding timpani introduction through to the blazing conclusion, it is truly one of the greatest 'Firsts'. BRAHMS' DOUBLE CONCERTO 7.30PM, SATURDAY 22 AUGUST PERTH CONCERT HALL Husband and wife soloists, Pinchas Zukerman and Amanda Forsyth, bring an intimate warmth to Brahms' glorious Double Concerto. Composing his Second Symphony in an idyllic seaside village, Brahms wrote "the melodies flow so freely that one must be careful not to trample them." Lyrical, pastoral and concluding with a glorious burst of orchestral sunlight, the Second remains one of his most popular symphonies. GARRICK OHLSSON PLAYS BRAHMS' FIRST 7.30PM, FRIDAY 28 AUGUST PERTH CONCERT HALL Dramatic and intimate - Brahms' most personal orchestral works. Brahms' might First Piano Concerto was conceived during a period of youthful emotional turmoil. Uncompromising and dynamic, its dramatic opening launches a titanic struggle between piano and orchestra. In contrast, the poetic Third Symphony was written at the height of Brahms' career. Filled with expansive melodies, its joyous longings and brooding dramas lead to a hushed and bittersweet resolution. GARRICK OHLSSON PLAYS BRAHMS' SECOND 7.30PM, SATURDAY 29 AUGUST PERTH CONCERT HALL There is no piano concerto grander than Brahms' Second. Dramatic, rapturous, buoyant and embracing, it demands an interpretation that is both virtuosic and poetic. WASO is delighted to welcome acclaimed American pianist Garrick Ohlsson to perform this much-loved masterpiece. The extraordinary finale of the Fourth Symphony is a thrilling yet tragic conclusion to an epic work of concentrated expression, and a powerful conclusion to our celebration of the music of Brahms.
