Wagner Dream Jonathan Harvey 1939 Opera in Nine Scenes libretto by Jean-Claude Carrière world premiere 28 April 2007 Grand Théâtre de la Ville de Luxembourg Assignment and coproduction by De Nederlandse Opera, Grand Théâtre de la Ville de Luxembour, Holland Festival and IRCAM-Centre Pompidou Paris Now that all of Wagners major operas have been performed by DNO, the time has come for an opera about Wagner himself. Jonathan Harvey depicts the last day of the maestros life, recalling Wagners ideas about writing an opera about Buddhism. At the moment of his own contact with the hereafter, a transcendental experience, he experiences the story of Prakriti and Ananda, a couple who find each other in their struggle for renunciation, as Wagner had wanted to describe in Die Sieger. Two worlds and two cultures meet; the Western and rational outlook that knowledge must be won through the experience of emotion and the Eastern concept that redemption can only be found by liberating oneself from suffering as well as from joy. The differences between the two worlds are expressed in great contrast through the spoken word, song, live music and electronic music. musical direction Martyn Brabbins direction Pierre Audi sets/lighting Jean Kalman costumes Robby Duiveman Prakriti Claire Booth Ananda Gordon Gietz Vairochana Matthew Best Buddha Dale Duesing Mother Rebecca de Pont Davies Old Brahmin Richard Angas Wagner Johan Leysen Cosima Catherine ten Bruggencate Bracha van Doesburgh Charles van Tassel Jane Oakland Vajrayogini Basja Chanowski orchestra Ictus Ensemble IRCAM computer music design Gilbert Nouno Interludes computer music design Carl Faia, Gilbert Nouno

It’s better a broken arm, than a bruised spirit or a broken heart - the NextlevelSquad will express the love for art in the most painful and beautiful way, mind-blowing twist and turns from the arms and body, heart filled moments, creatures, shapes and sounds that will give you a show you’ve never seen before. Performing for the first time in the Luxembourg, this Brooklyn squad developed bone break choreography, a technique created from a unique style called “flexing” which fuses bone breaking, isolation, connecting, and other dance techniques. Featuring BonesTheMachine, this style made up of sequential shapes and shoulder dislocation has an eerie but beautiful quality that definitely breaks with convention.
