Seine Examensarbeit schrieb er über die Kammermusik Paul Hindemiths. 1931 übernahm er eine Dozentur in Heidelberg und gründete 1935 das "Heidelberger Kammerorchester". 1948 war er Mitbegründer der Kranichsteiner (später Darmstädter) Ferienkurse für Neue Musik. 1954 wurde er Professor für Komposition in Detmold, ab 1957 bis zu seiner Emeritierung in Freiburg im Breisgau. Parallel war Fortner Präsident der Deutschen Sektion der Internationalen Gesellschaft für Neue Musik (IGNM). Er komponierte Opern, Bühnen- und Orchesterwerke sowie Klavier- und Orgelwerke.
