The leading female character, Violetta Valéry, was based on a real-life bon vivant, a cult figure who died of tuberculosis in 1847 after pursuing a glamorous, free-living existence. The composer and his librettist reduced the lavish social novel to a psychological drama that essentially takes place between three characters. The music is as varied as the many forces that influence Violetta. original production Salzburger Festspiele 2005 musical direction Paolo Carignani director Willy Decker set design Wolfgang Gussmann costume design Wolfgang Gussmann Susana Mendoza lighting design Hans Toelstede choreography Athol Farmer dramaturgy Klaus Bertisch orchestra Nederlands Philharmonisch Orkest chorus Koor van De Nederlandse Opera directed by Martin Wright Violetta Valéry Marina Poplavskaya Flora Bervoix Fredrika Brillembourg Annina Diane Pilcher Alfredo Germont Ismael Jordi Giorgio Germont Andrzej Dobber Gastone de Létorières Gregorio Gonzalez Barone Douphol Roger Smeets Marchese d'Obigny Herman Wallén Dottore Grenvil Luigi Roni Giuseppe Ruud Fiselier Commisionario Jan Polak Domestico di Flora Sander Heutinck Un Cavaliere Peter Arink Un Ospite Athol Farmer

OPERA EXTRAVAGANZA. Gran Salotto del Belcanto Full concert via www.artmusic.tv from Friday 3 June The country that invented opera has more than 800 theatres lying unused and neglected. Now a group of young singers is leading the charge to save them. They have launched a crowd-funding campaign to save Italy’s dilapated opera houses, hundreds which have been left to rot. Now, Italian citizens in the tiny town of Bevagna, Perugia, have donated a great deal of money to relaunch the spectacular Francesco Torti opera house, which was originally built as a palazzo in the 1100’s and then converted into an opera house in the 19th century. This concert, was kindly made available to Artmusic.TV by Susanna Ohtonen, a Finnish soprano, who has lived and worked in Italy for 25 years and who has launched the initiative nicknamed ‘Adopt a Theatre’ campaign, to bring the country’s opera houses back to life.
