Yesterday I did the Azumanga Daioh theme, posted to Facebook only for now as I'm not too thrilled with the result. Today I tried the Pokemon theme (original Japanese version), and it came out better. I have a few other old MIDI files from the '90s of popular anime series / Evangelion and Ranma. Maybe I'll try fitting them into the player piano at some point too. There is a lot of pitch-bends in the Evangelion theme, though, so it'll be tricky. There was a lot of pitch-bends in this one too for the spoken parts, or where there's a bunch of Pokemon voices before the final cadence begins. Sounds a bit weird without the pitch bends. I suppose I could try to do chromatic glissandi if I really wanted to spend a lot of time on this sort of thing. I just threw this together in about three hours. To do this I used an orchestrated MIDI file made by someone called "Tokkie" in the late '90s, picking out parts and spreading them out over the piano octaves, removing duplicate notes, notes that play while others are held, etc. In hindsight, I realize that I should have put the girl's scream into higher registers, like I did with the "Pikachuu!" This version is a mixture of the full single and the TV show version, so it has a few more bars than the TV show version, but doesn't have the second verse of the single. View the TV show version here: (http•••) Hear the full single: (http•••) See a live performance by the original singer, Rica Matsumoto (who also voiced the main character, Satoshi / or Ash as he was called in American versions): (http•••) (which has the lyrics on screen, in Japanese of course) I first heard this song back in the late '90s when someone asked me to translate the lyrics for him. The music was composed by Hirokazu Tanaka shortly after leaving Nintendo where he had written a lot of videogame music.
