Harry Partch was a pioneer in the field of microtonality, the use of pitches in between our standard notes. He was an adamant believer in the idea of pure intervals, and spoke very strongly against modern tuning practices for their "egregious corruption" of just intonation, and he decided to use his prowess as an instrument maker to fix that. He built a whole new set of rules for scale construction, and applied them to create the Genesis Scale, a massive 43-note structure out of which he built many of his works. Conlon Nancarrow Freed Levine Pratt Hodges Mendoza Reich Thiessen Loomis Lees Lavoie Andersson Olman Carleton Gilchrist Burke Dawson
Conlon Nancarrow's work is unlike anything that came before it. He was a hacker before computers existed, using and abusing self-playing pianos in order to create music that would have been literally impossible for human beings to perform. He was fascinated with rhythms, writing pieces with lots of different tempos at once and even working irrational numbers like pi into his compositions. His explorations of what rhythms could be when freed from the limitations of a human performer are revolutionary to this day, and he managed to accomplish in the mid-20th century things that you'd think could only be done on a modern computer.
