Johann Adolph Hasse +••.••(...)): Mandolin Concerto in G Major II. Largo - 0:00 III. Allegro - 2:12 Arranged for mandolin orchestra and soloist by Siegfried Behrend, 1965. This is a mid-18th century mandolin concerto by one of the most popular German composers of the day. The original instrumentation was solo mandolin plus two violins and continuo. The Behrend arrangement is still in print from Trekel. There are other arrangements of the piece, including a mandolin and piano version by John Craton available from his Wolfhead Music site. I have previously recorded the opening allegro, in a different instrumentation. This is my recording of the second and third movements (the Largo and the final Allegro) / I may also re-record the first movement with this instrumentation. 1890s Umberto Ceccherini mandolin Mid-Missouri M-0W mandolin (x2) Mid-Missouri M-111 mandola Suzuki MC-815 mandocello

The American composer JOHN CRATON composed the Variations on "Doen Daphne d'Over Schoone Maeght" for the Dutch mandolinist Ferdinand Binnendijk as a gift for the latter's performance of Craton's Mandolin Concerto No. 1 in D Minor. Ferdinand, with Eva van den Dool at the piano, premièred the Concerto on February 13th 2006, in the Music hall of the Centre for the Arts, De Muzerie, Zwolle, Netherlands. The Variations on "Doen Daphne d'Over Schoone Maeght" for solo mandolin were premièred by Ferdinand Binnendijk in the same Music hall on March 31st 2006, during a concert by Ferdinand Binnendijk and other mandolin and piano students of the Centre for the Arts, De Muzerie in Zwolle. At this event Craton's 1st Mandolin Concerto No. 1 in D Minor was programmed as well and again highly appreciated by the public among who was Mr. John Craton himself, who had come to the Netherlands to witness several premières of his compositions. With Ferdinand Binnendijk as the soloist, Craton's Mandolin Concerto No. 1 was performed later that year with orchestra; on June 15th 2006 in the Concert Hall of the Nieuwe Buitensociëteit in Zwolle, together with Het Orkest van het Oosten lead by Candida Thompson as the conductor (there is a video of that particular concert that you can view here on Youtube). And, together with the Amsterdam Symphony Orchestra conducted by Peter Sánta, on the 1st of July during the Open Air Festival at the Rode Torenplein in Zwolle, Netherlands. Later John Craton composed 7 more Variation sets for mandolin solo on themes of Jacob van Eyck's "Der Fluyten Lusthof". They were all dedicated to the musicians of the Dutch Mandolin Chamber Orchestra Het CONSORT. All 8 Variations (Silvester in de Morgenstont, Janneman en Alemoer, Bockxvoetje, Ho Ho op Myn Brack en Winden, Doen Daphne d'Over Schoone Maeght, Ach Treurt Mijn Bedroefde, Laura, Wat Zal Men op den Avond Doen) are wonderful compositions for mandolin solo and published by WOLFHEAD MUSIC. They can be had for free to study and perform; just click here to download the PDF file and enjoy!
