Arsace (originally written for an alto castrato) is one of three men who admire Partenope, the mythological Queen of Naples.. Handel's Partenope is rich in musical interest, handling in traditional form a plot that has elements of comedy in it. Translation: Recitativo ARSACES I ask ye not, ye woes I bear, to leave me long in pleasing peace; some moments only from his care Arsaces' fighting soul release. Come, sweet oblivion, haste away, restore my weary wounded breast; my anguish for a while delay, and marble make my bed of rest. (A melancholy symphony is heard.) Aria What notes that mourn in such a solemn sound, so melancholy moving breath around? Ah! 'tis the murmur that my cares have chose to lull their weary clamours to repose. (Sleeps.)

"Arsace begs Rosmira to stop her revenge, but she wishes to go all the way and tells him to leave. He obeys, but reveals his genuine and now clear love for her. She admits her true feelings to herself: she loves him but cannot control her anger." Translation (by Marc D. and Eser): Recitativo ROSMIRA Oh God! I feel as if my heart were starting from my chest to follow the steps of Arsaces! However, my faith, once betrayed, in need of a revenge, is not convinced yet of his loyalty. Aria His face pleases me but I fear his heart, his unfaithful heart that one day deceived me. I feel that love talks to me of peace, but my fierce wrath cannot appease itself.

It was rejected by the Royal Academy of Music, because of its frivolous nature, with relatively few extended arias and more recitative." - Wikipedia. When Partenope was revived in December 1730, the eighteen-bar opening ritornello of the aria "Io seguo sol" was reduced to four bars. Chrysander's edition only gives the short version, and it is of course the original long version that is performed here. This explains why I do not show the score until Rosmira starts singing. Translation (by Marc D. and Eser): ROSMIRA I can follow alone, audaciously, wild beasts through the woods, but I dread the footprints of Love in the forests; I know the reason why: cruel Cupid's attacks are relentless, while the wild beasts always end up wounded and humiliated at my feet.
