Giacomo Fogliano Palma 1500 1507
Segue cuor e non stare (Segui cuore e non stare) 0:06 Verses 1 & 2 of the original frottola 2:20 Instrumental arrangement (recorder, 2 cornemuses, harp, vielle) Although the frottola "L'amor donna chio te porto" is one of the most frequently performed songs among modern early music ensembles all over the world, its composer Giacomo Fogliano has been all but forgotten, overshadowed by his more famous Italian and Franco-Flemish contemporaries. His lesser known work "Segue cuor" (sp. Segui cuore) is typical of its genre with its overall homophonic structure with a few surprising rhythmic twists. It must have been a well regarded song in its time since one artist even painted it on a decorative plate most likely offered as a gift to a wealthy patron. One can hear the three alto/tenor voices crossing lines and perhaps competing for pre-eminence. This recording was generated using MAIKA, a Spanish language Vocaloid, and Music Studio 2, an iPhone app. The reverb was added with Audacity. Since the frottola is pitched comfortably in the middle alto to bass range, I used an all "male" vocal ensemble for this production. Text: Segue cuor e non restare (Follow your heart and do not stay) De servir chi te non cura (to serve one who does not care) Chio gia inteso chi la dura Vitorioso sole andare Non ti muova ira o disdegno (Do not be moved to anger or disdain) Dal servir o no tormento (from serving, or torment) Che arivar non si po al segno Defiato senza stento Nel gran mar contrario al vento (in the great sea against the wind) El nochier si vede stare (for additional translation, see the comments below).
