Instrument: 3/14 Möller Municipal Organ, Opus 5819 Organ specifications & info: (http•••) Peer Gynt is a play in five acts by the Norwegian dramatist Henrik Ibsen (1828 – 1906). Although the play was written in 1867, it was only premiered almost a decade later, on February 24, 1876, in Christiania (now Oslo). Ibsen himself asked Edvard Hagerup Grieg to write the incidental music for Peer Gynt. The result was Grieg’s Opus 23, for orchestra, in twenty-six movements. Later, the composer combined eight of those movements on his suites Op. 46 (1888) and Op. 55 (1891). For years, those two suites would be the only parts of music available, since the original score was only published in 1908, one year after Grieg’s death, by the Norwegian composer, conductor and violinist Johan Halvorsen (1864 – 1935). The transcription of the suite Opus 46 for the organ was first made by Harvey Bartlett Gaul (1881 – 1945), and then revised and readapted by Cristiano Rizzotto after careful consultation with the orchestral score. Gaul was an American composer, organist and choirmaster. Born in Brooklyn, NY, he was mostly known as a composer of church music. He died in Pittsburgh, PA, on December 1st, 1945, of injuries from a car accident, after being an organist at Calvary Episcopal Church in Pittsburgh for thirty-five years (1910 – 1945). He is memorialized by an annual award to composers for outstanding work, the Harvey Gaul Memorial Composition Contest. Peer Gynt was written in Bokmål (literally “book tongue”), the most widely used written standard of the Norwegian language. Ibsen was an important advocate for this conservative form of Norwegian during the fierce language reform of the mid-19th century, which culminated on the 1907 orthography and final reform in 1917. The play was loosely based on the Norwegian fairy tale of the same name.
