Carlo Zecchi Ottorino Respighi Dino Ciani Francesco Libetta Beatrice Rana Vincenzo Galilei 1937 1939
From the land of song and the violin, but Italy has produced some wonderful pianists as well over the years. The great ABM and the miraculous Ferruccio B of course, but also Guido Agosti, Dino Ciani, Francesco Libetta, Sergio Fiorentino, Beatrice Rana - and this fellow here, Carlo Zecchi. Surely one of the most vivid pianists on record, we only have a fraction of what we should have with him due to a car accident he was involved in 1939 where he injured his hand. If you're sinisterly bent, the story around in the piano world goes that having insured it earlier, he now had a sum to collect from the insurance company which could keep him afloat for the rest of his life. Providing he did not resume his career as a concert pianist of course. His hand eventually healed sufficiently to play at an advanced level again, but whether from reduced capacity or to avoid having to give up any insurance money he instead turned to conducting, and aside from some scattered solo recordings during the next few decades his main function as a pianist from this point on was as a chamber musician. Here he is in 1937 however, hand ok and driving a disappointingly crash-safe Fabbrica Italiana piano, playing two rarely heard arrangements by his fellow countryman Ottorino Respighi. Respighi: Ancient Airs and Dances 00:00 - Gagliarda (Suite I No.2, after Vincenzo Galilei's mid-1500s original for lute) 04:20 - Siciliana (Suite III No.3, after an anonymous late 1500s composer) (arr for piano by Zecchi?) - Carlo Zecchi, piano / Source: Cetra Studio Recordings
