Luigi Rinaldo Legnani Mauro Giuliani Langvik Fossa 1790 1819 1820 1877 2007 2015
This guitar is a part of Luthier Leonardo Michelin Salomons fellowship project on 19th century guitarbuilding. When the famous Italian virtuoso Mauro Giuliani went back to Italy in 1819, there was an opening for a Guitar virtuoso in Vienna. Luigi Legnani filled this gap upon arriving in Vienna in 1820. Legnani collaborated with Johann Georg Stauffer (the most famous Guitar builder in Vienna at the time) who developed the guitar known as the «Legnani Model». This Model became very popular, and several Viennese luthiers built «Legnani Model» Guitars. This particular Guitar in this Video is a copy of a Johan Anton Stauffer (the son of Johann Georg) who only made Legnani Model guitars. Even though many texts claims that Legnani himself was building guitars, there is no evidence to support this. The collaboration between the Stauffer family and Legnani was a luthier/musician collaboration (according to a.o. Monaldini, 2015). It is a remarkable guitar full of innovations. A curved backplate, and a very short scale makes it very comfortable to play. The floating and adjustable neck allowed for easy access to the highest frets, and you could easily adjust string height. Why these innovations are not main stream on modern classical guitars is to me a mystery... (http•••) Luigi Rinaldo Legnani (7 November 1790 – 5 August 1877) was an Italian virtuoso guitarist, singer and composer. He wrote some of the most demanding fiery virtuosic pieces, with opus numbers ranging up to 250. Still his most famous work is the 36 capriccios in all tonalities. This opus 64 is a set of variations that is rarely performed. I first heard this piece performed in a guitarcompetition in 2007, where the performer played it with remarkable virtuosity. I thought that if I could only play this piece I would probably win all the competitions in the world. So I started practising the piece immediately. I soon realised that the piece had little musical depth, and lots of difficulties. So I decided not to perform it in concerts. However I kept the piece as a technique exercise for all these years, never performing it for anyone. With this Guitar in my hand I realised it was time to do something with this crazy piece. So here it is, as fast as I can, I hope you enjoy it, it only took 14 years of practice Recorded with Telefunken M61 (omni) in AB Stereo and a Blue Babybottle SL. It went through my Focusrite Clarett and into my Mac. Thanks to Roger Langvik for the reverb samples.
