Antonio Salieri Shaffer Nabokov Tales 1475 1564 1830 1832 1958 1979 1984
Mozart and Salieri (Russian: «Мо́царт и Салье́ри», romanized: Mótsart i Sal'yéri) is a poetic drama by Alexander Pushkin. The play was written in 1830 as one of his four short plays known as The Little Tragedies, and was published in 1832. Based on one of the numerous rumours caused by the early death of Mozart, it features only three characters: Mozart, Antonio Salieri, and a non-speaking part in the blind fiddler whose playing Mozart finds hilarious, and Salieri is appalled by. It was the only one of Pushkin's plays that was staged during his lifetime. Mozart and Salieri was the inspiration for Peter Shaffer's 1979 play Amadeus, which Shaffer adapted for the 1984 film of the same name. This video is a 1958 teleproduction of the play. The translation is partially taken from Vladimir Nabokov's anthology of translated Russian poetry Verses and Versions (See below for Nabokov's blurb on Pushkin) and has been modified in a few places to better fit the production. English Version Edited by Nicholas Kasseinov Cast: Nikita Podgorny as Mozart Mikhail Astangov as Salieri Vladimir Dorofeev as the old man with the fiddle Directed by N. Ignatova Vladimir Nabokov (a genius) on Pushkin (also a genius, if not a greater one): "It seems unnecessary to remind the reader that Alexander Pushkin was Russia's greatest poet but it may be preferable not to take any chances. Apart from numerous short lyrics displaying a precision of expression and a melody of tone that Russian literature had never known before, he wrote epics, ballads, fairy tales, humorous or romantic fantasies, dramas in blank verse, and that prodigious "novel" consisting of sonnet-like strophes / Eugene Onegin. He applied the principles of his poetry / an epigrammatical precision and a rhythmical balance difficult to define without examples / to his prose. This precision and balance were quite abandoned by the great by diffuse Russian novelists of the 19th century." Note on play: This reference to Michelangelo Buonarroti +••.••(...)) is based on an unfounded rumor that he once killed a man to study the anatomy of his corpse for the improvement of his art.
