Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by / Orquesta Filarmónica de Bergen dirigida por Neeme Järvi. Norwegian composer Johan Svendsen +••.••(...)) was a contemporary and rival to Edvard Grieg. His Norwegian Rhapsodies were built on the guise of Liszt’s own; some of which he orchestrated. The tunes collected in here are of popular extraction, belonging to Lindeman’s collection of Older and Newer Norwegian Mountain Melodies, always paying attention to harmony and rich counterpoint. El compositor noruego Johan Svendsen +••.••(...)) fue contemporáneo y rival de Edward Grieg. Sus Rapsodias noruegas fueron influidas por aquellas de Liszt; algunas de las que Svendsen orquestó. Johannes Haarklou Christian Cappelen Grieg Svendsen Sinding Schubert Rachmaninov 1847 1925
The Norwegian composer, organist and music critic Johannes Haarklou +••.••(...)) studied piano and harmony in Norway with Christian Cappelen, whom I recently featured in this channel. He later went to the Leipzig Conservatory, where he met Grieg, and later still to Berlin. His main career was as an organist and he seems to have suffered as a composer by being in the shade of Grieg, Svendsen and Sinding. He was however one of Norway' most prolific opera composers, and also wrote four symphonies. I suspect that the neglect of his piano music could be blamed on his unidiomatic piano writing (based on what I have seen). However, there are some fine pieces. Haarklou's 'Moments Musicaux' (probably from the mid-1880s) come chronologically between those of Schubert and Rachmaninov. From the title of this piece, one would expect something sanctimonious - but Haarklou surprises us with a Brahmsian outburst in the middle. My thumbnail shows a colourized detail from a 1915 photo of a group os nuns at a Convent of the Holy Faith in Ireland. / / Played by Phillip Sear (http•••) (Email: •••@••• WhatsApp: (http•••) )
