Adagio in G for cello & orchestra - Woldemar Bargiel Olsi Leka playing with the Chamber Orchestra of Mechelen conducted by Tom Van den Eynde. Live recording 17th march 2012 - Theater Mechelen Bargiel was born in Berlin, and was the half brother of Clara Schumann. Bargiel's father Adolph was a well-known piano and voice teacher while his mother Mariane had been unhappily married to Clara's father, Friedrich Wieck. Clara was nine years older than Woldemar. Throughout their lives, they enjoyed a warm relationship. The initial opportunities which led to the success and recognition he enjoyed were due to Clara, who introduced him to both Robert Schumann and Felix Mendelssohn. Bargiel received his first lessons at home and later with the well-known Berlin teacher of music theory Siegfried Wilhelm Dehn. Upon the suggestion of Schumann and the recommendation of Mendelssohn, Bargiel at age 16 went to study at the famous Leipzig Conservatory with some of the leading men of music: Ignaz Moscheles (piano) and Niels Gade (composition), and also with Julius Rietz. After leaving Leipzig in 1850, he returned to Berlin where he tried to make ends meet by giving private lessons. Eventually, Clara and Robert were able to arrange for the publication of some of his early works, including his First Piano Trio. Subsequently, Bargiel held positions at the conservatories in Cologne and Rotterdam (where he met Hermine Tours, his future wife, sister of the composer Berthold Tours) before accepting a position at the prestigious Hochschule fur Musik in Berlin where he taught for the rest of his life. Among his many students were Paul Juon, Waldemar von Baußnern, Alexander Ilyinsky and Leopold Godowsky. Besides teaching and composing, Bargiel served with Brahms as co-editor of the complete editions of Schumann's and Chopin's works. While Bargiel did not write a lot of music, most of what he composed was well thought out and shows solid musical craftsmanship. His chamber music—he wrote four string quartets, a string octet and three piano trios—represents an important part of his output.

Alexander Ilyinsky: Reverie in D flat major op. 17 no. 3 Moderato assai performed by Christian Dillig (piano), www.christiandillig.com „Reverie“ by Russian composer Alexander Alexandrovich Ilyinsky (Александр Александрович Ильинский; Alexander Iljinski; 1859 to 1920) is the 3rd of 6 character pieces for piano op. 17 penned by Alexander Ilyinsky, 4 of which are available as sheet music on IMSLP. Ilyinsky was a student of Woldemar Bargiel in Berlin and later taught composition as a professor in Moscow. His most famous student was Vasily Kallinikov. Ilyinsky was infected by the idea of the so-called Mighty Bunch around Mily Balakirev and Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov of a national Russian music. His works, which cover a broad spectrum from piano music to chamber music, vocal works and orchestral music, fell into oblivion with the exception of the piano miniature „Berceuse“. After the musical revolution in Russia at the beginning of the 20th century, IIlyinsky’s works were no longer published and are also missing from recordings of the Russian label Melodiya. I consider the present piece to be a masterpiece, a beautiful work that would be worthy of rediscovery by great performers and of being carried into the concert halls of the world. The title "Reverie", which was quite common for character pieces in its time, may make one think of the well-known pieces of the same name by Schumann, Debussy or Tchaikovsky. However, the tempo and the composer's dynamic wishes, which are evident from the notes, already show that this piece follows the idea of an ethereal reverie in the character at its highest in places. The tempo marking is therefore not "slow", but "moderato assai", by which I understand the rather calm quarter pulse, which, coupled with the staggered eighth note movements, sometimes creates a rather virtuosic tempo. One can imagine behind the title rather a kind of dream fantasy. The dreamer is gripped by different emotions. The music oscillates between ethereal, pathetic and melancholic. The eighth-note motion in the upper voice is very cantabile and is counterpointed by dialoguing eighth-note motion in the middle voice. The oscillating modal harmony in the quasi-folkloric middle section leads one into a trance through the unchanging harp figures before the composer finds his way back to the opening section via lush forte sounds. From the same cycle I have also recorded the Récit intéressant in F major op. 17 No. 2 (http•••) and from another cycle another piece by Ilyinsky: Mazurka in G major op.

Alexander Ilyinsky Vasily Kalinnikov Anatoly Nikolayevich Alexandrov Alexandrov Nikolai Roslavets 1859 1920
Alexander Alexandrovich Ilyinsky +••.••(...)) was a Russian music teacher and composer, best known for the Lullaby (Berceuse), Op. 13, No. 7, from his orchestral suite "Noure and Anitra", and for the opera The Fountain of Bakhchisaray set to Pushkin's poem of the same name. Alexander Ilyinsky was born in Tsarskoye Selo in 1859. His father was a physician in the Alexander Cadet Corps. His students included Vasily Kalinnikov, Anatoly Nikolayevich Alexandrov and Nikolai Roslavets. This short "The Spinning Top" (Волчок) is meant to invoke the vision of a child's spinning top, wound, released and slowly wobbling toward rest. Although originally written for Piano, I arranged this piece for Concert (Pedal) Harp.
