Sonetto 104 del Petrarca from Années de pèlerinage (Years of Pilgrimage) Second Year: Italy Franz Liszt +••.••(...)) Liszt became renowned throughout Europe during the 19th century for his great skill as a performer. He was said by his contemporaries to have been the most technically advanced pianist of his age and perhaps the greatest pianist of all time.[4] He was also an important and influential composer, a notable piano teacher, a conductor who contributed significantly to the modern development of the art, and a benefactor to other composers and performers, notably Richard Wagner, Hector Berlioz, Camille Saint-Saëns, Edvard Grieg and Alexander Borodin. His pianistic lineage comes directly from Beethoven, who taught Czerny (composer of numerous unvaluable technical exercises for the piano) his most influential piano teacher.

Nocturne no.1 op. 9 no. 1 in B flat minor Frederic Chopin +••.••(...)) Frederic Chopin is the most emblematic pianist-composer from Poland. Most of his compositions are written for the piano which he, through his sophisticated and poetic artistry, expanded technically and artistically with a unique style admired by all his contemporaries and musicians from then on. He wrote Piano Concertos, Ballads (which he was the first composer to apply this term for an instrumental piece), Scherzos, Etudes, Nocturnes, Mazurkas, Preludes, Waltzes and many other small genres. His pianistic poetry inspired many composers after him, including Ravel , Debussy, Scriabin, Rachmaninov, and his piano works represent a technical and artistic challenge for all the pianists. The Nocturne is a musical genre created by the Irish pianist and composer John Field +••.••(...)) which consists on an evocative melodic line accompanied by arpeggiated chords inspired in the atmosphere of the night. Even though Field was the genre's inventor, Chopin took it to a higher level of artistry and his nocturnes represent one of the highest points in the romantic repertoire. Chopin's nocturnes are inspired in the Italian bel canto where a melodic declamatory line flows through the accompaniment, embellished by all sorts of melodic variations typical of the Italian opera, including virtuosistic passages, all embedded with Chopin's unmistakable poetic style.

Sonata no. 8 op. 13 in C minor "Pathetique" Ludwig van Beethoven +••.••(...)) - Grave-Allegro di molto e con brio - Adagio Cantabile - Rondo: Allegro The "Pathetique" Sonata is one of the early examples of Beethoven revolutionary approach to the style. Its label name (given by Beethoven himself) comes from the greek Pathos which means experience/suffering. This sonata along with the lines of the previous sonatas' Beethovenian style is full of emotional content and its choice of key (C minor) is not casual, C minor was the key that he used for pieces such as the 5th symphony, Third Piano Concerto which contain this idea of the heroic struggle against the destiny forces and transcendentalism inherent to his life and music.
