Sibelius Jean François Rivest Kent Nagano North State Symphony Thirteen Strings 1992 2006 2009
In this new series, North State Symphony Music Director Scott Seaton and guests delve into the great works of classical music. In Episode 1, Scott and guest Jean-François Rivest break down what makes Sibelius and his Seventh Symphony so revolutionary, including melodic construction from fragments to a near complete abandonment from classical forms and structures in favor of a more free form structure that is reflective of nature itself. About Jean-François Rivest: Quebec conductor Jean-François Rivest has been Artistic Director of the Orford Arts Centre since 2009. He has been Artistic Director of the Orchestre Symphonique de Laval and of Ottawa’s Thirteen Strings Ensemble, as well as conductor-in-residence of the Orchestre Symphonique de Montréal, from 2006 to 2009, where he developed a relationship with Kent Nagano. Since 1992, he has taught orchestral conducting and performances classes at the Université de Montréal. He is Founder, Artistic Director, and Principal Conductor of the Orchestre de l’Université de Montréal. As a violinist, he has studied at the Conservatoire de Montréal and at the Juilliard School.
