Spectrum Concerts Berlin Berliner Philharmonie Carnegie Hall Ernst Toch Rolf Liebermann John Harbison 1988 1995 2007 2008
A Film by Renate Lieberenz und Petra Kölsch (Rundfunk Berlin-Brandenburg (2007) and Deutsche Welle) Next Stop Manhattan - Classical Music by a special ensemble . Twenty years ago American cellist Frank Dodge started a chamber music ensemble to fill a gap in the legendary musical life of Berlin, and to build bridges. One bridge was between Germany and the USA, with festival programs of American chamber music and house-concerts at diplomatic events. Another second bridge is between the musicians and the audience. Even in the chamber music hall of the great Berliner Philharmonie, where Spectrum Concerts Berlin continues to perform twenty years later, one can experience much of the true intimacy of this special musical form. Finally, there have been bridges built to neglected master-composers like Ernst Toch. / Frank Dodge remains creative director of the organization, which recently has also appeared in New York at Carnegie Hall's Zankel Hall, at The Times Center and the College of Staten Island (CUNY), and in Los Angeles at the invitation of the Villa Aurora and Goethe Institut Los Angeles. And Spectrum Concerts Berlin is sponsored by committed private individuals, companies and foundations both in Germany and the USA, through a friends organization created in 1995. Its first honorary members, Rolf Liebermann, Robert Helps and Wolfgang Stresemann, have since been joined by former President of Germany Richard von Weizsäcker and John Harbison. www.spectrumconcerts.com
