Kati Agócs Mivos Quartet Metropolis Ensemble 2015 2018
Developing variations on a single motive in continuous form (one movement). “Tantric”, from the Sanskrit, means “woven together”: We weave the strands of our nature into a unified whole. Everything in this work comes from one simple motive: an embellishing turn around a single note. The motive assumes an increasingly individualized, elevated, and melodic presence over the course of the work's 20-minute trajectory. At first discrete, the variations begin to interrupt and even to invade one another, creating a dynamic form of developing variations until the motive finally flowers, bursting open into a more complete version of itself. Mivos Quartet originally gave the New York premiere of Tantric Variations (String Quartet #1) during Kati Agócs's curatorial residence with Metropolis Ensemble at 1 Rivington Street in the Bowery in March 2018. The piece was commissioned by the Cecilia String Quartet in 2015, In this performance, Mivos plays the piece live at Scholes Street Studio in Brooklyn, New York.
