Florida Young Artists Orchestra Gurevich Pablo Sarasate Jonathan May Severe
Performance details: Conducted by Alvaro Gomez, recorded at Sanford Performing Arts Center. Florida Young Artists Orchestra. Erin Chew, concertmaster. My teacher was Lev Gurevich. This is a videorecording of a piece I did with my youth orchestra, the Florida Young Artists Orchestra (FYAO). The piece is Zigeunerweisen (Gypsy Airs) by Pablo de Sarasate. Ever since I had joined the FYAO, Jonathan May had been in charge of the orchestras as artistic director, and he made a real impact on my life. After the second rehearsal of this piece with him as conductor, he remarked to us how glad he was that we had known him as long as we did, how much of an adventure it had been, and how proud he was of all of us. Mr. May had been my conductor and friend for 12 of my 17 years. Later that week, we all received emails telling us that Jonathan had been taken to the hospital. The next day, Michael Miller sent out another email, telling us the devastating news that Jonathan May had died after suffering a severe stroke. He taught and inspired thousands of students just like me every week, and so I wish to dedicate this performance to him, and to thank him for all the years he gave to us all. I don't know where I would be without him. / The piece is divided into four parts: Moderato (0:00 - 1:12) Lento (1:12 - 5:00) Un Poco Più Lento (5:01 - 6:47) Allegro Molto Vivace (6:47-8:55) / The video recording was produced by Charlie Burket of Fresh Pixel Media.
