Pierre Sancan: Sonatine for Flute and Piano Adrienn Kantor - flute, Scott Mitchell - piano www.adriennkantor.com Pierre Sancan French pianist and composer Pierre Sancan was, along with Olivier Messiaen and Henri Dutilleux, a major figure among French musicians in the mid-20th century transition between modern and contemporary eras, but outside France his name is almost unknown. Born in Mazamet in the South of France, Sancan began in musical studies in Morocco and Toulouse before entering the Paris Conservatoire, where he took conducting with Charles Münch and Roger Désormière, piano with Yves Nat, and composition with Henri Büsser. In 1943, Sancan won the Conservatoire's Prix de Rome with his cantata La Légende de Icare, but did not assume a regular teaching post there until 1956 when his former master Yves Nat retired. Sancan held this job until his own retirement in 1985. (Biography from allmusic.com) Adrienn Kantor Adrienn Kantor has recently performed as a soloist with the American Symphony Orchestra in New York and the RCS Orchestra in Glasgow, and has toured with orchestras as principal flautist in Carnegie Hall and Alice Tully Hall in New York, Shanghai Grand Theater, National Center for the Performing Arts in Beijing, Mariinsky Theater in St. Petersburg, Great Hall of Moscow Conservatory, Konzerthaus Vienna, and Konzerthaus Berlin, among others. She is a prize winner of the New York Flute Club's Competition, the Bard Conservatory's Concerto Competition, the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland Concerto Competition, and was awarded the John MacGregor Flute Prize at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. She also received the Silver Medal of the Worshipful Company of Musicians, a Livery Company founded in London in 1500. Ms Kantor is currently pursuing her Master of Music degree at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland and has participated in the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra's mentoring scheme. She holds a Bachelor of Music degree in Flute Performance from the Bard Conservatory and a Bachelor of Arts degree in German Studies from Bard College. Ralph Vaughan Williams Anthony Rolfe Johnson Rolfe Graham Johnson Maurice Ravel Duke Quartet 1909 1940 2010
This wonderful cycle of songs for tenor, string quartet and piano (a setting of six poems by A. E. Housman, from the collection "A Shropshire Lad"), performed here by the late lamented English tenor Anthony Rolfe Johnson [1940-2010], the Duke Quartet and the pianist Graham Johnson, was completed by Ralph Vaughan Williams in 1909, not long after he had taken in Paris a few lessons from Maurice Ravel. Hence occasional suggestions of the influence that the latter may have had on him when he composed this work. The titles of the songs are: 1/ [00:00] On Wenlock Edge 2/ [03:43] From far, from eve and morning 3/ [05:38] Is my team ploughing? 4/ [09:40] Oh, when I was in love with you 5/ [10:22] Bredon Hill 6/ [18:05] Clun.
