It must contain everything” (Gustav Mahler). David Briggs first fell in love with the music of Gustav Mahler as the 17-year old Principal Viola of the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain. Completely under Mahler’s spell for the past three decades, one of his most major projects has been to transcribe the great orchestral symphonies +••.••(...) and 8) for the organ. In this respect he is unique in the world and his performances and recordings have met with considerable critical acclaim in the international musical press. The sound world is certainly different to the orchestra, but encompasses an equal breadth and vivacity of tonal palette and kaleidoscopic impact. His transcription of the remarkable Second Symphony, often called ‘The Resurrection' was premiered at St John the Divine in New York City in 2013 - since then David has performed it over twenty-five times on three continents. This is music on the grandest, most transcendent scale and is frequently overwhelming in its emotional effect on the listener. The great organ and acoustic of Blackburn Cathedral add great éclat to this remarkable music, aided and abetted by two stunning Canadian soloists and the magnificent choral contribution of the City of Birmingham Choir and the Renaissance Singers. Available only from www.david-briggs.org - Double CD £16 (including worldwide post and packing). Approximate equivalent is 18.75 euros/US$20/CAD$25. Ruth Gipps George Weldon Weldon Rimsky Korsakov Glazunov City Birmingham Orchestra Birmingham Orchestra City Birmingham Choir 1921 1944 1945 1949
Ruth Gipps: Prelude for Bass Clarinet Solo / Mark O’Brien, CBSO Principal Bass Clarinet Ruth Gipps MBE +••.••(...)) Ruth ‘Wid’ Gipps joined the CBO (City of Birmingham Orchestra, as it was known then) as second oboe in the summer of 1944 – an early appointment to the new full-time orchestra. Also an accomplished concert pianist, Gipps was already finding her voice as a composer and conductor and the orchestra’s principal conductor at the time, George Weldon, offered her numerous opportunities to showcase her many musical talents. On 25 March 1945 she played in the orchestra in Rimsky-Korsakov’s Capriccio Espagnol, appeared as soloist in Glazunov’s First Piano Concerto, and finally played cor anglais in the premiere of her own First Symphony. ‘How often does musical history show a case of so remarkable a symphony written by a girl of twenty-one – or for that matter, by a boy?’ asked the Birmingham Post. After she left the orchestra in the spring of that year, Weldon continued to champion Gipps’ music and she went on to direct the City of Birmingham Choir, found the London Repertoire Orchestra and compose a further four symphonies. In 1949, meanwhile, she launched and edited Play On – the CBSO’s first in-house magazine. Gipps was a truly remarkable lady with an incredible musical talent and continues to hold a special place within the CBSO family history. (http•••)
