Jascha Brodsky:1st Violin; Louis Berman: 2nd Violin; Max Aronoff: Viola; Orlando Cole: Cello. Begun in 1927 by Curtis Institute students as the Swastika Quartet, they adopted the name of their Alma Mater after the German Third Reich usurped the swastika symbol. They were the first American string quartet to successfully challenge its European counterparts in concert and on recordings. After about 5000 performances, the quartet disbanded in 1981 upon the death of violist Max Aronoff. 00:00 String Quartet in B Flat Major Op 67 1. Vivace 07:14 String Quartet in B Flat Major Op 67 2. The Vanbrugh and their guests present Dvořák’s incomparable viola quintet, composed in Iowa shortly after the equally celebrated ‘American’ string quartet. A review of the work’s premiere in 1894 noted that the quintet was "of the kind about which a commentator may write a small volume without exhausting his admiration or fully describing their beauties". We agree!
