EZIO von GEORG FRIEDRICH HÄNDEL Dramma per musica in drei Akten | Text nach Pietro Metastasio In italienischer Sprache mit deutschen Übertiteln Eine Koproduktion mit den Schwetzinger Festspielen Als „der letzte Römer ist der Feldherr und Konsul Ætius Flavius (um 390-454 ) in die Geschichtsschreibung eingegangen. Dieser ultimative Vertreter der Spezies „antiker Held steht im Zentrum von Händels am 15. Januar 1732 in London uraufgeführter Oper. Sie basiert auf einem Libretto des damals noch ziemlich unbekannten Pietro Metastasio +••.••(...)) aus der Zeit, bevor er kaiserlicher Hofpoet in Wien wurde. Es ist für den römischen Karneval 172 8 bestimmt gewesen und alles andere als monarchistisch korrekt. In diesem genialen Nachtstück der politischen Intrige ist der unerbittliche Niedergang eines aufrechten, aber gesellschaftlich völlig unbedarften Haudegens auf höfischem Parkett in atemberaubendem Tempo mitzuerleben. Händel greift vor allem den melancholischen Grundton des Stoffes auf und gibt den Figuren ein „inneres Gesicht, eine „musikalische Seele. Die Handlung spielt 45 1 n. Chr., gleich nach Ætius mythischem Sieg über die Hunnen Attilas. Angestachelt durch seinen Minister Maximus, macht Kaiser Valentinianus III. Ætius die Braut streitig, bezichtigt ihn des Hochverrats, verurteilt ihn, begnadigt ihn, beschließt seine Exekution ... Am Ende herrscht dennoch eitel Sonnenschein, jedoch nicht dank kaiserlicher Milde, sondern aufgrund kaiserlicher Feigheit (oder soll man es „Diplomatie nennen?). Ein Schluss, der nur als vorläufig angesehen werden kann, wusste das zeitgenössische Publikum doch sehr wohl, dass alle antiken (historischen) Protagonisten innerhalb kürzester Zeit gewaltsam zu Tode gekommen waren.
