Karl Eduard Goepfart Hashimoto Franz Liszt Hugo Riemann Gustav Schreck 1532 1859 1875 1876 1890 1898 1942 1976 2009
00:00 - I. Allegro 05:51 - II. Andante 10:21 - III. Finale: Allegro molto / Bassoon: Roland Schulenburg Clarinet: Hendrik Schnöke Piano: Miki Hashimoto Year of Recording: 2009 / "Karl Eduard Goepfart was born in 1859 in Mönchenholzen near Erfurt, the son of a teacher. At an early age he received music lessons from his father, later at the music school in Weimar (piano with Franz Liszt). After his first engagement as a conductor in 1875-1876 in Baltimore, he returned to Germany, where he received his final musical studies in Weimar. He was active as a conductor and choirmaster in several cities. He died in Weimar in 1942. Today Goepfart is nearly unknown. Listed with his own entry in the old dictionary of Hugo Riemann, one finds nothing at all in the new MGG, a fate he shares with Gustav Schreck, whose Sonata for Bassoon (ACC 1532) was published nearly in the same year as Goepfart's "Two-Character Pieces op. 31" at Merseburger in Leipzig, around 1890. His chamber music is always enjoyable to listen to and to play; for example, his beautiful Trio in G minor for piano, clarinet, and bassoon." Okumura Narita Kunihiko Hashimoto Midori Hosokawa Hosokawa Kiyoshi Nobutoki Akira Ifukube 1925 1994
Hajime Okumura was born in Saitama, Japan in 1925 and studied composition at the Tokyo Music School under Tamezo Narita, Kunihiko Hashimoto, Midori Hosokawa, Kiyoshi Nobutoki, and Akira Ifukube. After that, he experienced playing the oboe in a military band, and then went on to film music. His pure music consists mostly of piano pieces, and he has written a large number of sonatas and sonatinas in particular. His style is strongly influenced by Akira Ifukube, with an earthy, nationalistic style that accentuates rhythm, and many of his pieces are very lively, and there are also many performance recordings. In my research, I could not find a sound source for this second sonata on YouTube, so I have now databased it. Okumura later became a member of the "New Eight Group," and his works were featured in the 19th and 27th competitions, respectively, for the popularization of brass band music. Okumura, who was very active, passed away in 1994.
