One could say it was a change from a classical style to a more nationalistic style – in my case, the nation was Japan and it involved the use of modes and harmony in fourths. Works in the same vein include Sonatina for Piano (1971), Four Pieces Based on Manyoshu (1972), Flute Sonata in D and Two Movements for Violin and Piano (both 1973). Thereafter, my interest shifted towards modern French music. It was at my first lesson with Hikaru Hayashi that I showed the first movement of the Violin Sonata, and I recall he was very encouraging about it. When I took him the second movement, he commented that the style had regressed a little but I should be able to write a good finale. I think it turned out as he said. However, this honeymoon period with my teacher didn’t last long due to my own stubbornness. The work was premiered on the evening of 6 April, 1973 at the Little Playhouse in Shibuya by Yuko Yoshimochi, a classmate from elementary school, and the composer. Incidentally, it was the day of my enrollment ceremony at the Tokyo University of the Arts. Hiroshi Aoshima
