Beethoven Wilhelm Kempff Joseph Keilberth Everett Vary Kempen Berliner Philharmoniker Berlin Symphony Orchestra Titania Palast 1950 1952
Ludwig van BEETHOVEN Piano Concerto No. 1 in C major op. 15 1. Allegro con brio 2. Largo 3. Rondo. Allegro scherzando Wilhelm Kempff, piano Berliner Philharmoniker / Joseph Keilberth Live performance, Berlin, Titania-Palast, 1 or 2 October 1950 Original broadcast tape lost/destroyed, 'rescued' only on LP Royale 1376 (1952) where the mysterious "Elliott Everett" plays the piano with the Berlin Symphony Orchestra under "Joseph Balzer". I did the best I could to improve the sound and reduce the surface crackle. Those who aren't 'best sound' worshippers will enjoy a very spontaneous performance of Kempff with beautiful inflections of piano sound, a bold glissando at the end of the development section, a deep felt Largo, humerous accentuation and Willy hammering chords into the orchestra's final bars of the 3rd movement. Kempff plays his own cadenzas which vary a little bit from those he played in the commercial DG recording of the concerto from about the same time with conductor Paul van Kempen.
