Last year our individual sense of what we know (or thought we knew) was turned upside down. Fear. Pandemic. Isolation. Injustice. Protests. Loss. When times are challenging to comprehend, we often look to artists help us make sense of our emotions. The Marcus Performing Arts Center (MPAC) looked to our community for BIPOC musicians, dancers, poets and composers that would be willing to share their feelings about all that was happening. We asked them to help us create a film that would amplify their voices and help all of us begin to comprehend that moment in history. Several amazing composers were sent photographs of our empty stages and spaces. Each chose a space that spoke to them. The incredible music they created was then played in that space as we filmed a spectacular dancer moving through those spaces. To these inspired creations, we further layered in powerful words from our community. What resulted was not a single film, but four films: Promise, Portrait of the Past, Platform as Protest, and Prayer. We are honored to share these films with you and provide these artists a stage for their undeniable talent. We gratefully acknowledge these artists and the gifts they shared.
