Notre Dame Massenet Festival Massenet
A compilation of clips from Jesus Garcia's critically acclaimed performance of Massenet's miracle opera "Le Jongleur de Notre Dame". In this opera, a happy street performer named Jean is shamed by a group of monks into joining the monastery. During his time in the monastery, he is teased and reviled by the monks for his inability to pray "correctly" and for his lack of talent in the "accepted arts" of poetry, sculpture, music, and painting. They constantly tell him that the only thing he excels in is eating their food and drinking their drinks. During the second act, Jean has an epiphany that makes him realize that God accepted him the way he was before he ever joined the monastery. Overcome with joy, he thanks the Blessed Virgin and states that if ever she would allow him to look upon her glory, he would gladly die. This epiphany emboldens him to sneak into the chapel on the day of Her ascension and perform his street act as a gesture of worship and thanks to the Blessed Virgin. The other monks, overhearing, enter the chapel and are enraged by Jean's "blasphemous" behavior. But just before they can pummel him, the statue of the Virgin comes to life and blesses little Jean. He dies at her feet and is taken to paradise, leaving the monks to ponder the scripture "Blessed are the simple, for they shall see God".
