Although it was planned in the l4th century, it took 250 years before the church reached its present state of completion — and it was never finished. Nevertheless, it immediately became the chief musical center of Bologna. Some of the musicians associated with San Petronio are hardly less known today than those associated with St. Marks in Venice: Banchieri, Giovanni Bononcini (Handel’s rival in London), Vitali (father and son), Domenico Gabrielli (one of the first cello virtuosi), Giuseppe Jacchini (another composer who was a cello virtuoso), Dall’Abaco, Corelli and Torelli. The musical life in Bologna during the 15th and 16th centuries was constantly enlivened by the Bolognese’s love of massed wind instruments. We read of trumpet playing for university, civic and religious ceremonies. The wedding procession of Lucrezia d’Este in 1487 consisted of a hundred musicians playing trumpets, cornets, flutes and trombones. Bologna’s "Concerto Palatino del Senato” became as famous throughout Italy as the concerted music at St. Marks. As an organization it performed for liturgical and academic ceremonies, and its concerts, facing the square from the peristyle of San Petronio, continued until the last quarter of the 18th century. Torelli’s trumpet sonatas were in keeping with the Bolognese’s fondness for wind music. Stylistically (by the order and number of movements) these sonatas are related to the church sonata, but there are also elements of the solo concerto in these works. The name "sonata” as Torelli applied it to his trumpet works was practically synonymous with the term "sinfonia,” and "concerto.” Some of these sonatas, in fact, fall into the category of what we would now call a concerto, while others in which the trumpet part is closely related melodically to the orchestra are more old-fashioned, and resemble the tutti-solo relationship found in the concerto grosso. Torelli’s violin concerti, on the other hand, are more "modern” in structure, frequently being in three movements (fast-slow-fast) with brilliant solo passages accompanied by continuo in a manner anticipating that employed lated by Vivaldi. The SONATA No. 1 in D is one of 28 such works Torelli wrote for one and two trumpets, although neither dates of composition nor the name (or names) of the trumpet players are known. The trumpet is not treated as a solo instrument in the style of a concerto; rather, it is one instrument of five in which its particular part is neither more nor less important than the other four. Its prominence is more apparent than real, since its tone contrasts with that of the strings and is thereby more easily heard than if it were another violin. Torelli’s Opus 8 was published posthumously in 1709, the year of his death. The entire opus consists of six concerti grossi and six violin concerti. The SONATA No. 7 in D for Trumpet and Strings begins with a short grave which leads to an allegro. The adagio reminds one of Corelli (it is, in fact, based on a motif occurring in the first movement of Corelli’s violin sonata Opus 5, No. 7). However, Torelli’s harmonies are more varied and the overall effect is one of greater warmth and color. The third movement, allegro, is in the nature of a dialogue between a solo cello and the trumpet. It is not at all improbable that the cello solo was played by Torelli’s young friend, the composer and cello virtuoso, Giuseppe Jacchini. The SONATA in G Major for Cello and Continuo was first published in 1955. Nothing is known about this sonata except that the composer’s name is spelled Torelly on the only! known manuscript of the work!
