Francesco Turini Olmstead 1589 1656 2009
Sonata a due canti by Francesco Turini +••.••(...)). Performed by the Alpine Ensemble at the Early Music Colorado Soiree in Boulder, Colorado on March 1, 2009. Paula Olmstead, alto recorder; Paul Goble, tenor recorder, Pam Miller, cello; Carl Wingquist, harpsichord. This is one of our favorite pieces. It has rarely been recorded, so it our hope that our interpretation will be helpful to other performers, despite a glitch near the end of the video (the camera turned itself off, but Paul was able to stitch in audio from an MP3 recording).
Here is a fascinating salon piece - 'the song of the lilacs' - by Carl Friedrich August (Charles) Hering +••.••(...)), a German composer and violinist who set up a music school in Berlin. It was published around 1860 (he seems to have written most of his music later in life) and is interesting for its very Brahmsian theme and use of the piano, combined with some stock salon decoration. Overall it is surprisingly effective. Hering wrote a lot of short pieces, but also symphonies and chamber music.
