Dass Rossinis Barbier von Sevilla heute zu den beliebtesten und meistgespielten Opern gehört, ist keinesfalls selbstverständlich / die Uraufführung war ein Skandal: stieß Rossinis Oper doch auf herbe Ablehnung beim römischen Publikum. Die bald darauf folgende und bis heute anhaltende Beliebtheit verdankt das Stück der sprühenden Lebendigkeit der Figuren und den köstlichen Belcanto Gesangsnummern, wie Figaros „Ich bin das Faktotum" oder Rosinas Kavatine „Frag ich mein beklomm'nes Herz", aber auch der Handlung voller Verwechslungen und Verstrickungen: Der Graf Almaviva (natürlich verkleidet) will Rosina, das Mündel des Doktor Bartolo für sich gewinnen. Dabei kommt ihm Doktor Bartolo höchstpersönlich in die Quere, der selbst Ansprüche auf die Angebetete und ihr Vermögen hegt. Die Turbulenzen sind beträchtlich, doch der leidenschaftliche Kuppler Figaro hat immer noch ein Ass im ärmel...
