'Voss' was adapted for opera from the Patrick White novel by composer Richard Meale and librettist David Malouf. It was a major endeavour to evoke Australian history and an Australian idiom within the operatic tradition, dramatising the interior landscape in conflict with the European compulsion to explore and conquer. 'Voss' used neo-Romantic textures, staging that dissolved the distance between city and desert, and extensive quotations from colonial-era music like the Australian Quadrilles of William Ellard. It was also seen as a culmination of decades of attempts to produce White's novel as the "great Australian film". Opera Australia's premiere cast recording won the 1988 ARIA Award for Best Classical Album, and features the Sydney Symphony Orchestra conducted by Stuart Challender, the Australian Opera Chorus directed by Gordon Kember, and Geoffrey Chard and Marilyn Richardson in the roles of Johann Ulrich Voss and Laura Trevelyan. In 2011, the National Film and Sound Archive inducted it into the 'Sounds of Australia' list of heritage recordings. This video features costume design drawings by Luciana Arrighi, and photographs of the 1986 and 1990 productions taken in part by Don McMurdo, Chrissie Koltai, and William Yang. Richard Meale Larry Sitsky Steffan Poulenc 1959 1960 1994 1998
0'1 Richard Meale] - Sonata for Flute and Piano + [STEFFAN AMMER] Quaver - cca 108; Semiquaver - cca 232; Crochet - cca 208; Crochet - cca 120. 15'09 Larry Sitsky - Sonata for Solo Flute Lied. Allegro robusto - Mystic Interlude - Theme & five Derivations - Perpetual Motion. Meale Sonata, finished in 1960 is most individual works of genre, among flute sonatas, such as Poulenc & Feld, written at the same time]. The range of expressions requested from the flute is at maximum. In the last movement he request the very high E'''' to be "shrill, brutal and even a quarter tone sharper". Sitsky Sonata was written during composer's studies in the US, in 1959. Basically traditional, it explores the player's technical skills to the maximum. In order to cope with the last movement circular breathing has been employed and for the ethical reasons the take of the last movement is not edited. Meal Sonata was performed in 1998 within a series 'Flute Music of Nations'. I recorded Sitsky sonata in 1994 [also as a Tone-engineer] in the same hall.
