Louis Victor Saar Saar Rheinberger Brahms Bach 1868 1889 1894 1918 1937
Phillip Sear plays a most attractive 1918 serenade by the Dutch pianist, composer and teacher Louis Victor Saar +••.••(...)). / Louis Victor Saar had a fascinating life. He studied with Rheinberger and Bussmeyer at the Munich conservatory and graduated in 1889. He then continued his studies in Vienna, Leipzig, and Berlin, including one winter with Brahms. He emigrated to the USA in 1894 and worked variously as a repetiteur, teacher at various conservatories (with early support from Dvorák), and composer and arranger. Saar wrote in many genres, but I am most familiar with his two piano arrangements of Bach pieces which, I think, had international popularity. I think it would be fascinating to trace the influence of American popular music on his compositions, the earliest of which were very Brahmsian. This piece has a peculiarly modern melodic feel, and could easily fit into the soundtrack of a 1960s film. The composer made a subsequent arrangement of this for violin and piano. / Played by Phillip Sear (http•••) (Email: •••@••• WhatsApp: (http•••) )

Brahms Saar Louis Victor Saar Rheinberger Bach 1868 1889 1894 1935 1937
Phillip Sear plays a truly wonderful tribute from pupil to master - a 1935 transcription of Brahms's famous song by the Dutch pianist, composer and teacher Louis Victor Saar +••.••(...)). / Louis Victor Saar had a fascinating life. He studied with Rheinberger and Bussmeyer at the Munich conservatory and graduated in 1889. He then continued his studies in Vienna, Leipzig, and Berlin, including one winter with Brahms. Saar emigrated to the USA in 1894 and worked variously as a répétiteur, teacher at various conservatories (with early support from Dvorák), and composer and arranger. He wrote in many genres, but I am most familiar with his two piano arrangements of Bach pieces which, I think, had international popularity. I think it would be fascinating to trace the influence of American popular music on his compositions, the earliest of which were very Brahmsian. This beautiful transcription features a magical introduction, interlude and postlude which capture elements of both Brahms's style and also later influences (note the augmented fifth chord at the end of the interlude between the two verses), while leaving the song itself largely unembellished. What an excellent encore this would make! Thumbnail image (detail from): A woman taking her baby from its cradle. Engraving. Credit: Wellcome Collection.
