Arnold Schoenberg Alexandre Tansman Mario Castelnuovo Tedesco Tedesco Toch Igor Stravinsky Ebell Bach 1944 1945 1950
Prelude to Genesis — Arnold Schoenberg Iain Farrington, Piano Los Angeles Zimriyah Chorale Nick Strimple, Conductor In 1944-45, the Hollywood composer Nathaniel Shilkret commissioned several emigré composers in Los Angeles to collaborate with him on a suite for narrator, orchestra and chorus with settings from the book of Genesis. Schoenberg was asked to compose the Prelude “The Earth was without form.” Other sections were composed by Alexandre Tansman, Darius Mihlaud, Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco, Ernst Toch, Igor Stravinsky and Shilkret himself. The work was premiered on November 18, 1945 at the Wilshire Ebell Theater. Schoenberg depicts the universe before the Creation with a fugue (which includes an introduction and a coda). He shapes melodic de- signs from changing row permutations, but refrains from drawing formal consequences from the “subjects.” The fugue – or fugato – consists of six subject entries which, despite their dodecaphonic transformation, clearly evince Bach as their model. “I used to say, ‘Bach was the first twelve-tone composer.’ That was meant as a joke, of course” (Schoenberg, Bach, 1950). In this performance, the orchestral score has been reduced for piano by Iain Farrington.
