"Although I used in my works the international contemporary language, my compositions reflect the aspirations of a man born in Panama, who with pride has waved the national flag in the most prestigious musical circles around the world, and who signs his correspondence as Roque Cordero, Panamanian composer." Roque Cordero Roque Cordero (August 16, 1917 / December 27, 2008) was a Panamanian-born composer of African heritage. Born in Panama City, he studied composition under Ernst Krenek and conducting under Dimitri Mitropoulos, Stanley Chapple, and Leon Barzin before becoming director of the Institute of Music and Artistic Director and conductor of the National Symphony of his native country. Later he was assistant director of the Latin American Music Center (LAMúsiCa), professor of composition at Indiana University, and, from 1972, distinguished professor emeritus at Illinois State University. His works have been widely performed in Latin America, the United States and Europe, receiving international awards for his First Symphony (Honorable Mention, Detroit, 1947), Rapsodia Campesina (First Prize, Panama, 1953), Second Symphony (Caro de Boesi Award, Caracas, Venezuela, 1957), Violin Concerto (1974 Koussevitzky International Recording Award), and Third String Quartet (Chamber Music Award, San José, Costa Rica, 1977). Several of his compositions have been recorded by the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, the Louisville Orchestra, the Chicago Sinfonietta (Eight Miniatures for Small Orchestra, Paul Freeman, conductor, Cedille Records) and various chamber music groups and soloists. He has appeared as guest conductor in Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, El Salvador, Guatemala, Panama, and in the United States. His "Sonata breve" for solo piano, composed in 1966, is published by C.F. Peters. His Second Symphony was performed by the Seattle Philharmonic in April 2008. "Cordero's twelve-tone style is largely contrapuntal with constant doubling, repetition, and imitation between the parts." Joseph Staus, "Twelve Tone Music in America" "Just as I am allowing Barbara Pentland to represent the large number of Canadian twelve-tone composers, I will allow Roque Cordero to represent the comparable number of twelve-tone composers from Central and South Amerca. Cordero's early works were basically tonal and with a nationalist, Panamanian orientation. He began to compose twelve-tone music while studying with Krenek, and his twelve-tone music retained a Panamanian flavor." Joseph Straus, "Twelve Tone Music in America "I had to integrated technical elements from Europe which I learned from Ernst Krenek, and before I studied Beethoven and Brahms and the others on my own but that technique has to be true for myself to express something that has to be completely personal. I am not necessarily quoting from Panamanian folk song because I have very seldom quoted directly from Panamanian folk song, but I do use rhythmic elements and some melodic design that can be found there without being any one in particular... But you can find that still in my latest compositions there is some element of Panamanian quotation that is based rhythmically on some Panamanian dances. The specific melody doesn't have anything to do with Panamanian folk song. And the point is: I will insist always to be recognized as a Panamanian composer." Roque Cordero (A list of significant twelve-tone composers from Central and South America would include: Juan Carlos Paz (Argentina), (Jose Ardevol (Cuba), and Alberto Ginastera. Which sets this site on a major mission to research Paz and Ardevol.
