Live recording from "Concert Exceptionnel", Eglise de St Julien-le-Pauvre, Paris 5, held on 21st October 2004. Cadenzas by Eric Arnal. BACH, C.P.E. (1714 – 1788) "Concerto in D major for Flute, Strings and Continuo", Wq 13 Edited by Leisinger & Rautenberg (2002), published by Musica Rara. I. Allegro II. Un poco andante e piano III. Allegro assai The loss of this wonderful 18th century Concerto, and its re-discovery, is the stuff of fairy tales. We know from the 1790 catalogue of CPE Bach’s estate that the concerto was composed in Berlin in 1744. The actual texture of the writing would have indicated all along it was written for the flute; but the catalogue of his musical estate listed it as a harpsichord work. This is hardly surprising, as CPE transcribed all his concerti for keyboard - of which he was a virtuoso. Thus it was listed in a 1770s catalogue of sheet music, held by Johann Ulrich Ringmacher’s short-lived music shop in Berlin, but no copy seemed to survive. The present work did not figure as a flute concerto until the 1905 catalogue from the CPE Bach scholar, Alfred Wotquenne. As events transpired, two copies of the actual flute concerto scores lay forgotten in the Berlin Sing-Akademie, and in World War ll somehow found their way on to a train leaving the city. When the train caught fire, the music was rescued by Russian soldiers, who took it to Kiev. This came to light only after the sensational recovery in 1997, by Christoph Wolff and Patricia Grimsted at the Archive Museum for Literature and Arts in Kiev. The scores were transferred back to Berlin in 2001, and published by Musica Rara in October 2003. CPE Bach was a musician and then Kapellmeister at the Court of Frederick the Great from 1740 to 1768, alongside the equally famous flautist, Josef Quantz. Quantz included excerpts from the transcribed Concerto, Wq 22, in his "Solfeggi" - practical exercises for the flute - identifying CPE Bach as the composer. One might speculate that His Majesty, an enthusiastic and talented musician and pupil of Quantz's, may not have been quite able to manage the virtuosity of Wq 13, with the consequence the Concerto was discreetly put away and hence forgotten. We wish to express our gratitude to the editor of Musica Rara, Richard Pringsheim, for the publication of this work, and allowing us the honour of its first (known) performance.

Compilation of movie scenes in which actors (and other famous people) play "themselves" - or at least versions of themselves. It's a growing trend in our celebrity-obsessed age but are these people really revealing their own character onscreen, or is it merely another role they're playing? And isn't that something we all do as we go about our daily lives? "I don't want to play the character of Joaquin any more... Now for the first time I'm doing something that, whether you like it or not, it really represents me." Joaquin Phoenix - in his fake documentary project 'I'm Still Here'.
