Alison Hagley John Eliot Gardiner Gioia Erba English Baroque Soloists
Alison Hagley (SUSANNA) singing Aria "Deh vieni, non tardar" with The English Baroque Soloists conducted by John Eliot Gardiner; SUSANNA; Deh, vieni, non tardar, oh gioia bella, vieni ove amore per goder t'appella, finché non splende in ciel notturna face, finché l'aria è ancor bruna e il mondo tace.

"O conchiglia marina" [22:01] Julie Moffat, soprano Ensemble InterContemporain, Hans Zender (1991) Luigi Dallapiccola's Liriche Greche is a set of three song cycles for soprano and orchestra written between 1942 and 1945. The individual cycles are Cinque frammenti di Saffo (Five Sappho Fragments) from 1942, Sex carmina Alcaei (Six Alcaeus Songs) from 1943, and Due liriche di Anacreonte (Two Anacreon Lyrics) from 1944 - 1945. All three set Salvatore Quasimodo's Italian translations of ancient Greek poetry. The Liriche Greche are Dallapiccola's first mature dodecaphonic compositions, displaying the influence of the Second Viennese School, particularly Webern, as well as James Joyce and Marcel Proust. Here are the texts of the songs, in Italian and English: Cinque frammenti di Saffo i. Hesperus, you bring back all that shining dawn dispersed: you bring back the sheep, you bring back the goat, you bring back the son to the mother. ii. O mia Gongila, ti prego: metti la tunica bianchissima e vieni a me davanti: Io sempre ti desidero bella nelle vesti. Cosi adorna, fai tremare chi guarda; e io ne godo, perche la tua bellezza rimprovera Afrodite. Oh my Gongyla, I pray you: put on the whitest tunic and come before me: I always desire you beautiful in garments. Thus adorned, you make tremble whoever looks; and I delight in it, because your beauty reproves Aphrodite. iii. "Dies the tender Adonis, oh Cytherea: and what shall we do?" "For a long time, maidens, beat your breasts and tear to shreds your vestments." iv. Full shone the moon when they paused near the altar: and the Cretan women with harmony on light feet began, carefree, to turn around the altar on the tender just-born grass. v. Io lungamente ho parlato in sogno con Afrodite. I at length spoke in a dream with Aphrodite. Languid Eros I desire to sing covered with many-flowered garlands, Eros who rules men, master of the Gods. ii. Eros like a cutter of trees struck me with a great ax and set me adrift in a wintry torrent. Sex carmina Alcaei i. O coronata di viole, divina dolce ridente Saffo. Oh crowned with violets, divine sweet smiling Sappho. ii. On my head which has suffered much and on my hoary breast let someone spread myrrh. iii. Already on the banks of the Xanthus return the horses, the birds of the marsh come down from the sky, from the mountain tops breaks free blue cold water and the vine blooms and the green reed sprouts. Already in the valleys resound songs of Spring. iv. But with plaited blossoms of dill let someone now encircle our neck and pour sweetly-perfumed oil on our breast. v. I already hear spring which approaches with its flowers: pour me quickly a cup of sweetest wine. vi. Oh sea-shell, daughter of the stone and of the shining white sea, you amaze the minds of children. (source: (http•••)
