Hi, I'm Ben Shute—I serve on the faculty of Oklahoma City University's Wanda L. Bass School of Music. In this video I share some thoughts on the flying spiccato in Bazzini's "Ronde des Lutins." It's a fun little piece but is a bit of a specialty item and should certainly not be regarded as the measure of great violin playing: there are many incredible violinists who don't play it, and that's perfectly fine. But for those studying it or interested in studying it, I hope this video will contain some helpful pointers. (http•••) A couple of corrections (on account of recording quickly between lessons): (1:00 Apologies for the whistling e"! Object lesson: in a humid environment, consider stopping the e" on the a'-string!) 3:16 In hindsight, the closest English equivalent to "lutin" is probably "hobgoblin." 4:17 I say "six" missteps but then give five (I ended up combining nos. 3 & 4...) 15:27 I say "[fingers] 2 and 3" but meant to say "1 and 2" (a bit of piano usage escaping there!)
