Meliton Balanchivadze Goga 1862 1897 1926 1930 1937
This antique 78rpm from 1930 features two piano-accompanied arias from two early Georgian operas that unfortunately haven't yet been released in their entirety. Meliton Balanchivadze +••.••(...)) was one of the pioneers of classical music in Georgia. Although his creative output has scarcely been recorded, he composed several popular and influential works of his time, including the opera "Tamar Tsbieri". He had started composing it as far back as 1897, but it only saw the premiere in 1926. In 1937, during "The Decade Of Georgian Culture" this opera was presented in Moscow under the title "Darejan Tsbieri" (Darejan The Wily"). Meliton Balanchivadze had three children who had drastically different fates. His daughter, Maria, died during the Blockade Of Leningrad. His one son, Andria, became a leading composer in Georgia. And his other son, Giorgi, later known as George Balanchine, is now considered as one of the founding fathers of American ballet. Performed by Shalva Tsirghiladze. Note that there's a spelling error on the title: it should be "Gocha's Aria", not "Goga's Aria".
