#NaxosMusic #ClassicalMusic #NaxosOpera #NaxosAudiovisual #OpéraComique Favola in musica in five acts and a prologue (1607) Libretto by Alessandro Striggio Monteverdi’s L’Orfeo was premiered in 1607 and is the oldest opera still performed today. The narrative is based on the Greek legend of Orpheus who, armed only with the weapons of music and love, descends into Hades in an attempt to bring his lost bride Eurydice back to the living world. The opera’s dramatic power is brought to life in this acclaimed production conducted by the great Monteverdi expert and interpreter Jordi Savall. Filmed at the Opéra Comique in Paris L’Orfeo features a virtuoso cast with the service of text and music always at its core. Come Scoglio "Like a Rock!" (Translation) Come scoglio immoto resta Like a rock, we stand immobile Contra i venti, e la tempesta, against the wind and storm, Così ognor quest'alma è forte and are always strong Nella fede, e nell'amor. in trust and love. Con noi nacque quella face From us is born the light Che ci piace, e ci consola, that gives us pleasure and comfort, E potrà la morte sola and the power of death alone Far che cangi affetto il cor. can change the affections of our hearts. Rispettate, anime ingrate, Respect, ungrateful spirit. Questo esempio di constanza, We are examples of loyalty E una barbara speranza against your primitive hopes, Non vi renda audaci ancor. and do not make you bold.
ITALIAN LYRICS: Nessun dorma! Nessun dorma! Dilegua, o notte! Tramontate, stelle! Tramontate, stelle! All'alba vincerò! Vincerò, vincerò! ENGLISH LYRICS: Nobody shall sleep!... Nobody shall sleep! Even you, o Princess, in your cold room, watch the stars, that tremble with love and with hope. But my secret is hidden within me, my name no one shall know... No!...No!... On your mouth I will tell it when the light shines. And my kiss will dissolve the silence that makes you mine!... (No one will know his name and we must, alas, die.) Vanish, o night! Set, stars! Set, stars! At dawn, I will win! I will win! I will win!
