Guildhall Strings was formed in 1981 (as The Guildhall String Ensemble) by David Takeno at The Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London. The Ensemble won several prizes in its first year, including the prestigious International Jeunesses Musicales Competition in Belgrade which launched them onto the international music scene. From its first concerts the Ensemble was heralded by the musical press as a highly gifted group, most notably in The Guardian where a performance was described as 'an object in ensemble playing'. The ensemble has an extensive repertoire ranging from Purcell, Bach, Handel, Corelli, Vivaldi, through Mozart, Tchaikovsky, Elgar, Stravinsky and Britten to the many contemporary works which have been written for them by composers including William Mathias, John Woolrich, Diana Burrell, Robert Saxton, Richard Rodney Bennett, Nigel Osborne and John McCabe. Many soloists have appeared with them, including Michala Petri, Evelyn Glennie, Peter Donohoe, Dmitry Sitkovetsky, Emma Johnson, Richard Stolzman, Manuel Barrueco, Nikolai Demidenko and William Bennett, tenor Philip Langridge, organist/harpsichordist Dame Gillian Weir and saxophonist John Harle. In 1999, Guildhall Strings was nominated for the prestigious Royal Philharmonic Society Music Award for its work in 1998. About Paul Nicholson, The English harpsichordist and organist, Paul Nicholson, studied harpsichord and organ at Dartington College of Arts before reading music at the University of York. His tutors included John Wellingham, Roy Truby, Nicholas Danby and Colin Tilney.Paul Nicholson's musical career consists of a variety of activities in chamber music, solo performance as an early-keyboard specialist, and as a conductor. As a member of the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment he appears in all these guises. He has musical partnerships with Fretwork, Convivium and Le Nouveau Quatuor, and recently his fortepiano playing has come to the fore in his recital work with violinist Elizabeth Wallfisch and the mezzo soprano Catherine Robbin. He is now a regular broadcaster on BBC Radio 3 and, as a Hyperion artist, his work has involved guest appearances as director and soloist with the Parley of Instruments in music by Arne, Linley and other English composers, as well as solo keyboard recordings of music by George Frideric Handel, Philips and Roseingrave. Paul Nicolson is also active as a Festival director, at both the London Handel Festival and the Tilford Bach Festival, and he is associate musical director of the London Handel Orchestra. He has guest directed the Norwegian Chamber Orchestra and The Sixteen, and his performances in America at the Boston Early Music Festival and the Carmel Bach Festival have met with acclaim.
