He was baptised the 23rd of May in 1742 in the Grote Kerk of The Hague. In 1759 he was appointed as the main organist of the Kloosterkerk. He gets mentioned as the main organist in 1768 in the ‘s-Gravenhaagsche Coruant when he opens the subscription of his opus 1, six sonatas for violin and obligato harpsichord. The work is dedicated to the Prince and Princess of Orange who had their residence in The Hague. In 1774 he advertises another work of him, which contains all kind of devotional songs. When the post as main organist and carillonneur of the Grote Kerk, gets vacant, because Johannes Albertus Groneman died, Kleijn succeeded him. In 1785 he brings out his opus 2, those are three sonates for three unaccompanied violins. As an organist, it is known that he organised many concerts, where he is very popular. He is mentioned as he plays in response to Abbé Vogler. 1788 he achieved a remarkable success as a composer; he organised a big concert with choral and orchestral music (with about hundred musicians) where Kleijn he is commissioned to compose the cantata and the symphonies. One of the pieces that were perfomed, must have been the Princelijke Ouverture, “Royal Ouverture”, which is kept in the Toonkunst Bibliotheek in Amsterdam. It contains three movements where Kleijn made a potpourri of patriotic popular songs, like the “Wilhelmus” where he composes a fugue on the theme in the first movement, “’t Is vreugde door ons Nederland, hoezee”. Due to political situations and thereby the decreasing popularity of the Royal House, Kleijn doesn’t get mentioned anymore after 1793. Although he preserved the organist post until his death in 1825.
