McAlpine Briggs Bach Nazareth Mercy
Erbarme dich - Bach, St. Matthew Passion BWV 244 Matthew 26.69-75 "Now Peter was sitting outside in the courtyard. And a maid came up to him, and said, "You also were with Jesus the Galilean." But he denied it before them all, saying, "I do not know what you mean." And when he went out to the porch, another maid saw him, and said to the bystanders, "This man was with Jesus of Nazareth." And again he denied it with an oath, "I do not know the man." After a little while the bystanders came up and said to Peter, "Certainly you are also one of them, for your accent betrays you." Then he began to invoke a curse on himself and to swear, "I do not know the man." And immediately the cock crowed. And Peter remembered the saying of Jesus, "Before the cock crows, you will deny me three times." And he went out and wept bitterly." Erbarme dich, mein Gott um meiner Zähren willen! Schaue hier, Herz und Auge weint vor dir bitterlich Erbarme dich, erbarme dich! Have mercy, my God, for the sake of my tears! Look here, heart and eyes weep bitterly before You. Have mercy, have mercy!
William McAlpine Virginia Zeani Joan Sutherland Covent Garden 1960
William McAlpine sings Alfredo's aria live from Covent Garden in January 1960. This is part of the extraordinary, unrehearsed performance in which Virginia Zeani sang Violetta as an emergency replacement for the ailing Joan Sutherland. None of the cast had ever set eyes on each other before they met on stage in the performance. Already ideally cast as a fresh and innocent sounding Alfredo, William McAlpine excelled himself that evening and proved the perfect partner for Zeani. The whole uniquely realistic performance is posted on this channel in thirteen videos.
