Virgilio Ranzato Arturo Toscanini Scala 1882 1905 1910 1937
Italian violinist Virgilio Ranzato, recorded in Milan c. June 1905, plays Pierne's 'Serenade.' I'm not sure where 'L'Ape' - the title shown on the label - comes from: I trust the sheet music! After all, the label also indicates that the recording was made in London, whereas as noted above it was made - by Fred Gaisberg - in Milan. Edited from Wikipedia: Virgilio Ranzato (May 7, 1882 in Venice – April 20, 1937 in Como) was an Italian composer and violinist. He began his career as violin player at the Conservatories of Venice and Milan. Later, he also studied musical composition. Thereafter, he worked mainly as a chamber music player or conductor. From around 1910 he worked mostly as a composer, and wrote an opera and several operettas. Ranzato served as concertmaster for the La Scala Orchestra under Arturo Toscanini.
Virgilio Ranzato Toscanini 1882 1910 1937
According to legend Pierne was 12 when he wrote this piece. Though, I gather scholars beg to differ. Virgilio Ranzato +••.••(...)) was a violinist/composer who served under Toscanini and seems to have started devoted himself to composing in 1910.
