Carlos Salzedo Granados Heidi Lehwalder Furness 1979 2010
Carlos Salzedo's timelessly classic Suite of Eight Dances, published by Colin Music. Each dance is dedicated to Salzedo's second wife and collaborator, Lucile Lawrence. The movements are: Gavotte, Menuet, Polka, Siciliana, Bolero, Seguidilla, Tango, Rumba. The first four are classical-era dances, and Salzedo adds a modern touch with the last four Latin dances, though boleros are also classical era dances. The artist has performed these dances perhaps more than any other work by Salzedo, finding more and more richness in them as time goes by. We think they are comparable to the famous dances by Granados. Please order the music from www.colinharpmusic.com or your usual music dealer. There were two famous recordings made of these dances, one by the composer for Mercury Records, and the other by Heidi Lehwalder for Nonesuch Records. While often performed by students, these are quite challenging pieces, especially as a full suite. This performance took place during the 2010 HarpMusicFest: the International Harp Festival of Philadelphia, in the Frank Furness-designed Chapel of the Church of St. Luke and The Epiphany. Saul Davis Zlatkovski is the Artistic Director of the festival. The harp is a Lyon & Healy Style 23 from 1979.
