Nikos Skalkottas +••.••(...)) The doe (I lafína) Text: traditional Around 1929, while he was still living in Berlin, Nikos Skalkottas (1904–49), a pupil of Paul Juon, Philipp Jarnach, Kurt Weill and Arnold Schoenberg, arranged a series of Greek folk songs for voice and piano, for the Greek soprano Margherita Perras. Some of these are now considered lost, but The Doe is still extant, one of only three works published in the composer’s lifetime (Athens, 1946). The text of the song first appeared in print in a collection of Greek folk songs by Claude Fauriel (1824–25). The first appearance of the original melody of the first section is in Ioannis Sakellaridis’ collection Tyrtaios (Athens, 1907). Skalkottas differs in the text as well as the form of the song, apparently having some other version in mind. Both the allegorical content of the poem and the sharply contrasting middle section provided inspiration for a different elaboration of the same material included in the famous 36 Greek Dances for orchestra (1931–36, rev. 1949) under the title Makedonikos.
