Louis Lavater Tales 1867 1937 1953
Phillip Sear plays the second of 12 Preludes (1937) by the talented Australian composer Louis Lavater +••.••(...)). / Louis Lavater +••.••(...)), born in Melbourne, was the son of a Swiss-born father and English-born mother. He initially studied medicine and worked in a bank, but soon turned to music, and also writing (he was a poet and author of short stories). I can't really give a summary here of his extraordinarily varied career, but there is an excellent biography here: (http•••) . Here in the UK I have only come across Lavater as a vocal arranger (I have somewhere in my music collection his popular vocal arrangement of 'Tales of the Vienna Woods'), but his piano music is worth looking at. For me, the preludes vary in quality and interest , but there are one or two gems, like this somewhat pastoral piece (in which one maybe hears an echo of Papageno's flute).
