Buy / Stream: (http•••) The Violins of Hope are a collection of restored instruments played by Jewish musicians during The Holocaust. In 2015, Nashville Symphony commissioned critically-acclaimed composer Jonathan Leshnoff to write a symphony dedicated to this project, and in 2018, the Nashville Symphony premiered this work with the actual Violins of Hope. On May 2nd, in honor of Holocaust Remembrance Day, this album will be released on Naxos. Featuring performances from Nashville Symphony and guitarist Jason Vieaux, this album is available now on Spotify, Apple Music, Amazon, ArkivMusic, and more: (http•••) In this documentary, Jonathan Leshnoff describes the inspiration and musical journey of this work, entitled ‘Symphony No. 4’, and Nashville Symphony musicians Gerald Greer and Carolyn Bailey give us a closer look at the Violins of Hope instruments. / This recording of Leshnoff’s Fourth Symphony features members of the Nashville Symphony playing on the ‘Violins of Hope’ – an extraordinary collection of instruments played by Jewish musicians during the Holocaust, restored by Israeli luthiers Amnon and Avshi Weinstein. Jonathan Leshnoff has been ranked among the most performed living composers by American orchestras in recent seasons, and upcoming seasons are comparably active with musical activity and collaborations. His Symphony No. 1 was available on Naxos 8.559670. According to Fanfare, it is ‘a satisfying work with potentially broad appeal, demonstrating that there is still plenty meaningful to say within the symphonic genre.’ (Want List) Also available is a recording of the Violin Concerto and String Quartet No. 1 featuring violin soloist Charles Wetherbee and the Carpe Diem String Quartet +••.••(...)). The artists involved in this release are all GRAMMY Award-winners, led by the Nashville Symphony and its music director Giancarlo Guerrero. Champions of new American music, among their award-winning recordings include works by Michael Daugherty (Metropolis Symphony on 8.559635; Tales of Hemingway on 8.559798), Stephen Paulus (Three Places of Enlightenment on 8.559740), and Jennifer Higdon (All Things Majestic and Viola Concerto on 8.559823). "Music and spirituality both allow me to transcend my physical limitations and journey to places that would otherwise be impossible to go. Jewish mysticism has served as an inexhaustible inspiration for me, as the works on this recording illustrate. Heichalos, based on the ancient mystical text, was written with the Violins of Hope in mind; I include reflective questions in the score to exude deep meditation from the musicians. My Guitar Concerto is an exploration of worlds from its mysterious beginnings to its fiery, dance-inspired finale. Starburst, my most performed work, is a sparkling display of the infinite energy of the cosmos." – Jonathan Leshnoff
